Compiègne the Chateau and the Car and Transportation Museum
A chateau has existed in Compiègne since 561, with changing locations. Charles V had a castle built in its present location in 1380. Louis XV completely rebuilt it between 1751-1788. After the revolution, Napoleon had the castle restored. He lived there with his 2nd wife, Marie-Louise. The castle was the autumn residence of Napoleon III and Eugenie during the second empire but became a national museum in 1870 after the fall of the Imperial Regime.
