Dungeness Spit is a growing sand bar which stretches roughly 6 miles out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca with a width of approximately 100 yards or so. It was named by the Vancouver Expedition in 1742 for its similarity to Dungeness Point in England. Near the tip of the spit sits New Dungeness Lighthouse which was originally built in 1857.
