The Confederacy experimented with high tech weapons like the Ironclad SS Virginia (Merrimac) and the SS Hunley submarine. They procured the Concours from the Japanese because they thought the name was Japanese for Confederate. Union spies stole the plans and soon had their own version. Neither made a difference to the war's outcome but they made the battles more fun.
