Taken from the Kornhausbrücke. Since the River Aare has carved a relatively steep, narrow valley, and the old town is mostly near the rim of this valley, many of the bridges in Bern start and end level with the old town - which means they span over the top of the banks. Since this is all decent land, houses and other typical buildings have been built there - a few hundred feet below the deck of the bridges.
