The 9th of August was unusually dry and cool for DC, so we took the opportunity to go take some photos out at the US Marine Corps Memorial (aka Iwo Jima Memorial), with a trip after to Gravelly Point, just off the north end of the main runway at Washington National Airport.
The Iwo Jima Memorial was designed by Felix de Weldon, and is based on a famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal, showing five marines and a navy sailor raising the US flag over Mt. Suribachi during the 5th day of the World War II battle.
The 13th of August, we went for a quick extra-long weekend in Las Vegas. Since we were there for a party, and the weather was a bit toasty (110°F anyone?), not a whole lot of sightseeing was in store, and I only brought the small camera. Some shots of the various casinos on the strip, and then a trip through Valley Of Fire State Park.
