A New Zealand endemic, it is essentially a coastal shrub. The downy foliage can be mistaken for that of the pohutukawa (Metrosideros robusta) although P. crassifolium has its leaves spirally placed on the stems. Fairly hardy in the UK but best close to the south and west coasts. Liable to be damaged by frosts lower than -8°C.
