8/7/06 - Dahlia Echo

Went for a 4 mile walk this morning - without the camera. Did this in the front yard afterwards.
Tried this and similar shots today with both the Nikkor-Micro 105mm 1:1 (lifesize) lens and with the Nikkor 75-300 with a Canon 500D close up lens. At least today, I preferred the 75-300 for the additional flexibility it provided. Couldn't really tell any difference in quality. With a 1.4x TC and the closeup lens, the 75-300 is just about 1:1 (lifesize) at the 300mm end - with several times more working distance than the 105.
After a little over a month using the 75-300 and 2 years using the 105, if I had to choose just one of them it would be the 75-300 (+ TC + closeup). It provides a lifesize macro and the equivalent of a 630 mm telephoto in a single lens (albeit a bit heavy at nearly two pounds plus probably the better part of a pound more for the closeup & TC). With the equipped lens collar, it is pretty nicely balanced for tripod use (which is 100% of my shots). A little less expensive than the 105, too.
One 75-300 negative - focal length is changed by pull/push of the lens barrel (as opposed to twisting). If the camera is pointed down, the lens wants to slide out to the 300mm end and you have to phyically hold it in place.
