04/20/09 - Spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains

A Serviceberry tree in bloom along Pass Run - near route 211 just east of the Shenandoah National Park Headquarters building. This is at a low elevation - spring hasn't come above the 3000' elevations. Went looking for redbuds and dogwoods - lots of redbuds from about 2500' and down but the only dogwoods were 2 miles from the Front Royal entrance which is the lowest elevation in the park. Spring is fun in the mountains - if you miss something then come later and go up a few hundred feet and get a second chance. Starting high on Skyline drive (about 4000 feet) you can drive to the lowest elevation in about an hour - in that hour you will have "fast-forwarded" spring from bare winter branches to full spring bloom. Oh - and it was pouring rain today for my kind of day with great color saturation.
