Owls of Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin

The winter of 2004-05 saw a major influx of owls coming down from Canada. For me, this had been one of the most elusive types of birds, and this has been a wonderful opportunity. Shooting some of these in -14 degrees F, however, leaves something to be desired.

As the winter progresses, the Great Gray Owls have been moving further south, following the food supply. It usually takes me about 2 1/2 hours to do a round trip, spotting between 14 to 24 owls. To date, I've seen 110 Great Gray Owls, 7 Northern Hawk Owls and 1 Barred Owl.

Thank you for your comments. It has been a relaxing and rewarding experience searching for these owls. There are many things I would love to capture and share, but some boundaries must be respected. I will miss them when Spring returns.

Your patience and endurance (brrr) have been nicely rewarded with some very beautiful and interesting shots. I, too found the flying owl shot at the end especially interesting.
