These medieval stone lions stood on either side of the Menin gate in the walls of the town of Ypres. Ypres was destroyed during WWI and these lions were found in the ruins of Ypres.
In 1936 these lions were presented to the Australian people as a gesture of friendship between the people of Ypres and the Australian people. They commemorate the service of australian soldiers who helped to defend Ypres in 1917.
