Stationed on a mesa above San Luis, Colorado, the Stations of the Cross shrine features bronze sculptures created by Huberto Maestas. A winding path up the mesa leads to the Chapel of All Saints (La Capillada Todos los Santos). San Luis is the oldest town in Colorado, founded in 1851.
If you go: Be advised that the elevation starts at 7,979 feet. For comparison purposes, that's only about 800 feet less than the tallest mountain in Texas! That's also about 8,000 less feet of atmosphere to protect you from the sun's rays. Wear sunscreen. Park across the street from the foot bridge leading to the Mesa. Although short sections of the trail have been paved, the trail is NOT wheelchair accessible. There is a road to the chapel at the top, but I don't know whether it's open for public access.
Photographic information: Photography is permitted for non-commercial purposes only. Generally, the sculptures face west or southwest, which means the faces will be in strong shade during the morning. Late afternoon may offer better lighting to capture details. For morning shoots, a large reflector could be helpful for those so inclined. I chose to shoot 3-exposure HDR (high dynamic range) images with a constant aperture and exposures between -1 and +1 EV's (exposure values). Post-processing was in Photomatix Pro where I seriously messed with the default settings. The over-processing may not be to everyone's taste, but at least it brings out the rich detail of these marvelous sculptures!
