After approximately 45 years, the submersible pump ground to a halt -- no water pressure. This was Ye Olde Photographer's first experience with this area of technology. The well head was totally underground and required backhoe work. Fortuitously, the well and offset pipe to the house appeared to be OK. The pump was hung on a one inch steel pipe, about 176 feet down, a non-trivial exercise to remove. The new pump is higher powered, uses polyethylene pipe, and the casing has been extended to above ground level. This more modern approach would purportedly permit a pump replacement in an hour or two instead of five or six. We also replaced the bladder-type storage tank which showed evidence of deterioration.
A weighted string verified the well is indeed drilled approximately 305 feet, a fact only verbally documented.
YOP doubts the new pump will last 45 years -- but then, neither will he! 8-)
