Nebraska

Ye Olde Photographer and his Faire Spouse zig-zagged through this state, enjoying some beautiful farm scenes and some interesting towns along the way. An unexpected highlight (having done no advance research) was some remarkable railroad history in North Platte, a major hub for the Union Pacific Railroad. Fairly recently a visitor center and observation tower, the Golden Spike Tower, has been installed overlooking the Union Pacific Bailey Yard. This is in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest railroad classification yard and is a mind boggling facility approximately eight miles long and two and a half miles wide.

We arrived in North Platte as a half-way point between southern Colorado and Vermillion, South Dakota, but ended up spending some time to take in a few sights before leaving. In addition to the rail yard, in Cody Park , on the north side of the city, there is a railroad museum which includes a Union Pacific Challenger 4-6-6-4 steam locomotive on exhibit along with some other railroad items.

Our visit to Nebraska was part of the Grand Tour 2016, a 5800 mile drive through flyover country!
