Mifflinburg was at one time informally known as "Buggy Town," as there was a concentration of buggy builders there. In the late 19th century, production reached several thousand a year.
Today there is a museum in town, built around the remains of the William Heiss operations. By some good fortune, several of his buildings were locked up and left untouched for several decades. They now provide a relatively complete display of a small family-run coach works.
