The boiler of a Shay is offset a bit to one side to
make room for this three-cyclinder engine. The 120º
crank throws and double acting cylinders provide six
power strokes per revolution. Since all wheels are
powered, there is tremendous traction; Ye Olde
Photographer has ridden a train behind a Shay
in West Virginia that climbed 12% grades.
