Swell shades are generally vertical louvers pivoted and shaped so they can close fairly
tightly. They are often made of substantial wood and can vastly reduce the volume when closed.
The shades can be positioned from the console via foot pedals. Pipe ranks in a chamber with
swell shades are said to be "under expression" reflecting the dynamics available to the organist
