Daniel Ricardo Teran is a ceramic artist residing in Philadelphia.
His work might be described as functional in form, but the overall effect involves complex patterns using texturing, layered slips and sgrafitto techniques to create quite artful effects. Daniel draws on some background in painting to create all sorts of imaginative and artistic decoration.
Daniel works with low-fired earthenware clay, building heavy, well-buttressed thrown pieces which are then trimmed, substantially in many cases, to obtain a final piece. He uses a contrasting slip with an opacifying additive to allow use of relatively thin layers. Brushing, wax resist and air blowing wet areas of slip, as well as incising designs with pointed tools, are among the techniques used to finish the pieces.
