Upsherin or Upsherinish (Yiddish: אפשערן, lit. "shear off") is a Jewish haircutting ceremony which was originally modeled on the Sephardic Jewish custom of shaving male children's hair in ancient Israel. It is now held when a Jewish boy is three years old. It is also known as "chalaka", written חלאקה.
