Rabbi Shalom Ifargan of blessed and saintly memory
(8 Tammuz 5754)
Rabbi Shalom was a known miracle-worker, and was born to an important Kabbalist family in southern Morocco in the Taroudant province in the Sous Valley. In this region an important group of Kabbalists grew up under the leadership of the Rambam Elbaz. One of his greatest students was Rabbi Yaacov Ifargan, one of the blessed forefathers of Rabbi Shalom. Rabbi Shalom, who was named for his grandfather Rabbi Shalom, who was known in the region as a righteous man and who grew up in the village of Tiznit. Although he was modest and played down his leadership, he was known to the members of his community as a righteous and devout man. Our rabbi and teacher, his father, Rabbi Haim, who was also known for his righteousness, was informed by a rabbi that a son would be born to him who would be smart and righteous, and who would learn Torah from Elijah the Prophet. Even in his youth Rabbi Shalom was known for his brilliance in Torah in the depths of Pardes (Jewish exegesis). The extent of the nobility and asceticism of his utterances of this world amazed all who knew him, who before their eyes blossomed and grew a superlative scholar and righteous foundation of the world. As was suitable for one of the great Jewish scholars, he was modest and unassuming, while being thoroughly conversant with all of the treasures of the Torah. As a magnificent son of Abraham our father, kindness and charity were evident in every word he spoke, goodness and Torah without limitation
n the last years of his life Rabbi Shalom studied with his young son Rabbi Yaacov Yisrael may he live a good long life amen, knowing that he would be the successor and the future of the institution. With Rabbi Yaacov, he studied in the Pardes of the Torah and apparently guided him in the many ways of repair that he used all his life. He even expressed to his family that his son Rabbi Yaacov Yisrael would be very successful in making repairs and would be blessed with the special help of G-d in order to help many people in Israel and around the world.
Rabbi Shalom went to heaven on 8 Tammuz 5754. Ever since, his son Rabbi Yaacov Yisrael Ifargan may he live a good long life amen, has continued in his father’s path, the public celebration in memory of a saintly rabbi, our teacher his righteous father who possessed the dignity of a king, in the presence of many distinguished people, ministers, and other important public figures along with great businessmen who support the works of Torah and kindness of the institutions.
