Wildflowers of New York State

I'm a self-taught amateur both as a photographer and as a botanist. I started this gallery just to display the beauty of the flowers, not as a field guide. That's why most of the photos do not inlcude leaves. That said, many viewers are using these photos for flower identification, which is fine. I've been reading field guides and id'ing wildflowers for decades, so I'm reasonably confident about the id's but there are no guarantees. Most of these photos were taken in the wild but some are from gardens. All were taken in the Finger Lakes region of central New York, except that a few where taken in nearby Pennsylvania.

This is a great resource! Thank you. Came here attempting to ID a plant that has been spreading on our property in the last few years. Finally determined that it is white snakeroot, which is blooming right now (September), and think it would be a nice addition to this collection of images, unless it is here somewhere and I've missed it.

Hi Joseph, The flowers you remember from childhood as Indian paintbrushes probably were hawkweeds. I have a photo of an orange hawkweed in this gallery. Hawkweeds are not related to the flowers out west that are called Indian paintbrushes. David

Hi David - I was looking for the name of a flower that we always saw as kids in the summer. I grew up in bath, ny . . . WE always knew them as Indian paintbrushes - they came in red, orange, & yellow, & usually on the sides of roads. Not a very big flower- just a bit of a tuft, actually, & memory tells me the smell was rather repugnant. I got curious about the name cuz we recently saw Indian paintbrush flowers in glacier NP that didn't look at all the same. Can you help me out?

Seeds and plants grow from seed are available in many places. Use Google for online sources. I buy plants in a nursery near my home that specializes in native plants. That nursery also sells seeds.

Beautifulfotos!! I am trying to ID (find the name) for a delicate bushy flower flwerin bout the edges of my back lawn - tiny, pale blooms with a delicate purply-white cast -sorry I can't send pic - cameras somewhat beyond me now. I thought maybe shad from descrption - Sararoga County.

I live in Newark and work in Waterloo... have been into id'ing (and foraging for edible) plants ever since I can remember... wondering where you took the pics of the lady's slippers- I know there where there are some in a bog in Newark, but didn't think there were any others...

What are the tall stalky wavy at the top wild plants all over ADK Mtns? they are now going/gone to seed, I collected a number of the large seed pods. almost cottony when opened, small brown seeds . Thanks for any help!!

beautiful gallery....i was here trying to find a fluffy pink flower, i happened upon this on the way to work a few days ago and its so beautiful that i just cant stop thinking about it. i am 50 years old and i have never seen this wildflower. now, there is also the fact that we have had two unusual floods here in the past five year. very serious flood, fema etc. i am open to the idea that these flowers are a product of someones garden having been flooded and depositing bulbs or seeds in this roadside area where i spotted this beautiful bright pink fluffy flower...its fantastic!

I live in Upstate NY and last summer I took a pic of this flower, they are all over the place but I can not seem to come up with an actual name?? Wondering if you can help me out....I do not see a pic of this flower here however it looks most like a white version of "your" Musk mallow (Malva moschata) found at the bottom of pg. 6 any help appreciated, thanks

norma assante have a long lasting wild purple flower that i never saw before. three purple curved petals face one way and the other two appear to face the opposite way. Grows tall and spikey tapering toward the top. below the 3 petal side are white and purple stipes. has 5 green sepals. in all, flower is about 1 1/4 inches in height. on two petal side, there is a curved tubular hook toward the back of the two petals. can anyone name it.

I would like to locate seeds for cardinal flower, dutchman's breeches, knotweed, touch-me-not, turk's cap lily purple fringed orchid, blue flag iris. Does anyone have a source. Additionally, in the southern tier (near Ithaca) I grew up with a flower that my mother called Indian paintbrush, but I cannot find it on any site. Picture listed for that name is not the same. It was 4" tall with a black hairy stem, and was yellow, orange and red. The flower looked like a round paintbrush, I don't remember the leaves. Can anyone help with my two requests.

I was trying to locate the name of a flower I photographed here in NYS 45 min south of Albany. Most sites were slow and tedious. Then I came across yours. I could quickly see a whole bunch and find out mine was a Cranebill. Beautiful shots. Thanks for the wonderful site. I will use it for reference in the future.
