Some photos draw my from the thumbnail, and then I'm disappointed in the larger image. But this one is a winner at any size. I like everything about it - the flowing and arching textures, the non-competing background, and that so watchful red eye. Great composition, colour, and especially fascinating use of texture. I can't suggest any improvement other than maybe a frame. Super shot.

MR Fixit, could you please resize this one from 1400px wide down to 1100px wide to be consistent with the posting guidelnes and to give more people a better chance of seeing your full size image all in one go.
I'll delete this comment once you've done that.
Thanks, John

Mr Fixit, interesting and fun image; good take on the theme. Great subject, shapes, colours and composition; I like the way you've included the OOF arch over the eye in the background.
The texture resulting from the 'scales' is good and the texture on the 'scales' has potential, but is only really evident towards the edges where the light comes in at an angle to the surface, and not so much in other parts of the image where the light is quite flat and even in shadow more than it needs to be with more varefully considered lighting. I think that with more flattering lighting you could really make this one shine against the theme to show off the textures more.
There's a certain softness to this one, particularly towards the edges, as if there's maybe a hint of colour separation that can happen with lenses that aren't achromatic.
I would have chosen a different reflection in the eye as the blinds at your window appear out of place with this guy; the reflection of you is ok as it puts the capturing of the image in context with you as the photographer.
The background is ok, but could be more interesting with maybe the large leaf of a tropical looking plant there or something like that, suitably defocused through use of the kind of DOF you have here of course.
If you decide to reshoot with different light, it would be a good idea to dust this guy off first for a cleaner subject, especially the eye, but for the rest as well.
I like this one and it has potential to be great.
