The term monsoon actually refers to a pattern of circulation which brings in warm moist air, not the amount of rainfall that falls as most people seem to think. A high pressure cell sets up over the four corners area of Arizona in July, August and September to bring moist Gulf air into the state. This results in the development of afternoon thunderstorms at that time of year and accounts for about half of the annual rainfall for the state..

Nice thunderstorm but "Monsoon" in Arizona?
