A lone lion, taller than a man, stood along the road spiralling uphill, a little ahead of the temple. I was informed this is a recent find by a Japanese expedition. A few (seemingly unfinished) other lions, huge also, lay on their side.
In the German Wikipedia I read the statue is from the 11th century and was erected here in the 1990's
