The Palace Tomb Built between walls that protected somewhat from the wind and thus erosion this is one of the greatest rock buildings. Two hypotheses hold it was built along the lines of a royal residence in the Hellenistic Orient or that it was built as a theatrical backdrop to treatrical state funerals, if this is the case is unclear. Another hypothesis, that it was an actual palace and not a mausoleum, has been proven wrong, if only because the 4 rooms cut into the rock are much too small for that purpose. In niches in the middle of the façade loculi for the dead have not been found, probably only memorial representations were displayed there.
