Nemrut 2006 09 1465b.jpg

A fragment (a horizontal segment of the torso) of a monumental lion statue, on the east terrace.

The altitude - 2150 m for the top of the tumulus - gives environmental conditions (serious seasonal and daily temperature variations, freezing and thawing cycles, wind, snow accumulation and sun exposure) that have caused serious damage to the sculptures. Furthermore, the Nemrut property is located within a first-degree earthquake zone and is very close to the East Anatolian Fault, which is seismically active.
