Eskişehir is a medium-sized city to the South East of Bursa and the last major stop before Ankara. From the Enc. Britt.: Lying near the site of the ancient Phrygian city of Dorylaeum, the present city probably began in Byzantine times as a cluster of settlements around hot springs. The scene of a Crusader victory over the Seljuq Turks in 1097, it came under Ottoman control near the end of the 13th century. The city expanded with the coming of the railway in the late 19th century and the immigration of Turks from the European provinces of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. Despite its name (Turkish: “Old City”), most of the city was rebuilt after its destruction in the Turkish War of Independence (1919–22). I have been there before and took pictures, but never had the time to scan them, let alone edit and publish them. So when people wrote to me in early 2006, that the city was on its way of becoming a competitor to Prague because of new artwork along its river and elsewhere, I wanted to see this new centre of the arts. I think Prague need not fear competition, but it is obvious that a lot of work is done to improve the general aspect of the city, and I liked it. I managed not to see most of its museums, and will later have to add some scans after all of Meerschaum pipes, for the production of which the city is famous. What you now see is the result of just some rambling through town.

During several visits I was struck by the attention to "street furniture" and "urban space": I think this city must have the highest per capita rate of statues, some of them pleasant and fun, some just fillers of space.

Eskişehir, Bursa’nın güneydoğusunda orta büyüklükte bir şehir ve Ankara’dan önceki son büyük durak. Britannica Ansiklopedisi’nden: “Tarihi Frig şehri Dorylaeum’un yakınındaki şimdiki şehir, muhtemelen Bizans döneminde, sýcak kaynakların etrafındaki bir yerleşim kümesi olarak kuruldu. 1097’de Haçlıların Selçklulara karşı zaferinin ardından, 13. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Osmanlı egemenliğine geçti. 19. yüzyılın sonlarında trenyolunun gelmesi ve 20. yüzyılın başlarında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun Avrupa’daki topraklarında yaşayan Türklerin göç etmesiyle şehir büyüdü.
