These caves are beautiful. Reputedly the largest and most wonderful of the country they rank high in the list of best caves of the world. One enters a (rather, last time there were many visitors, all Turkish) quiet subterranean atmosphere. The temperature is constant and fresh, the humidity seems to be good for asthmatics. A woman was sitting in the depth of the cave on a chair, she came there often because it was good for her condition, she told us. The caves are within easy reach of Tokat. Take a dolmus for three quarters of an hour, then you're handed over to a cab-driver, who will charge you fairly (though it is always smart to haggle and set a price first before you start). He will make a ride of twenty minutes into the mountains, then wait (or go and return in time) for an hour or more, and bring you back to the minibus “durak” (stop). He might make a little detour to show you an old han (see last page of this gallery) in the village that’s in need of restoration, but sound Seljuk type architecture.

An hour is too short if you really want to see it, so make it a bit more. The cave itself is some half mile long, and you will climb some stairs, go on a side-tour and return to the main track, all very nice. As for the pictures: no flash! So a digital camera or a very fast film will be you choice. Mine was digital. I had to edit all the pictures for colour, some for sharpness, and may have erred as for what would be the correct hue. On some spots the lights themselves made the picture monochrome, I transferred those to a greyish tint.

BALLICA MAĞARALARI

Bu mağaralar çok güzel. Ülkedeki en büyük ve en mükemmel mağaraların bunlar olduğu söyleniyor, dünyadaki en iyi mağaralar listesinde de üst sıralarda yer alıyor. Sessiz bir yeraltı atmosferine giriyorsunuz (son gittiğimde, hepsi Türk olan pekçok ziyaretçi vardı). İçerisi serin ve sabit bir sıcaklığa sahip, ayrıca oradaki nem oranı astımlılara iyi geliyor gibi gözüküyor. Mağaranın derin bir yerinde bir sandalyenin üzerinde bir kadın oturuyordu; söylediğine göre sağlığına iyi geldiği için sık sık oraya gidiyormuş. Mağaralara Tokat’tan ulaşım çok kolay. 45 dakika bir dolmuşta gidiyorsunuz, ardından sizden adil bir fiyat isteyecek bir taksi şoförüne teslim ediliyorsunuz (yine de yola çıkmadan pazarlık yapıp fiyat belirlemeniz akıllıca olur). Dağlara doğru 20 dakikalýk bir yolculuk yapacaksınız, daha sonra sürücünüz bir saat ya da daha uzun bir süre sizi bekleyecek (ya da gidip vaktinde geri dönecek) ve sizi minibüs durağına geri götürecek. Bir köyde, restorasyona ihtiyacı olan ve Selçuklu mimarisini hatırlatan bir hanı (bu galerideki son resimler) size göstermek için yoldan biraz sapabilir.

Gerçekten orayı görmek istiyorsanız bir saat çok kısa. Mağara yaklaşık bir kilometre uzunluğunda, biraz merdiven çıkacaksınız, bir yamaç turuna çıkacaksınız ve asıl yola geri döneceksiniz, hepsi çok hoş. Resimlerle ilgili olarak: hiç flaş yok. Bu yüzden tercihiniz bir dijital kamera veya çok hızlı bir film olmalı. Ben dijital kullandım. Bütün resimlerin renklerini ve bazılarının da netliğini düzeltmek zorunda kaldım ama doğru rengin ne olduğuyla ilgili hata yapmış olabilirim. Bazı noktalarda ışığın kendisi resimlerin renksiz olmasına sebep oldu, bunları griye dönüştürdüm.
