Yellow crab spider with bee prey

South Africa

This yellow crab spider is a female. She has caught a bee, and is feeding on it. One male crab spider is taking the opportunity to mate with her while she is preoccupied with her prey. Another one watches from a safe distance. At any other time, mating would be an extremely hazardous venture for the male, considering the size difference. The small flies, called jackal flies, hang around like jackals near a kill. A strange mix of feeding and mating frenzy indeed.
