South African Geophytes (Bulbs) - Guide for Identification

Online resources for plant identification are often difficult to apply. I hope to provide here a means to identify some South African bulbous plants that I have photographed over the last few years. I make no claims of greatness in terms of image quality, as many of the photographs were taken in far less than ideal circumstances and surroundings, and often with less than ideal equipment. On Amaryllids I am mostly very certain of identities. On some of the other plant families, it can be a bit more tricky, so please double check if it is really important to you. Much has been turned upside down by the recent and continuing flux of information from genetic analysis, and some families such as Hyacinthaceae have been all but completely shaken up. This is a natural evolution of botany as a science, and we should accept it as such. If you want more information, post a comment with e-mail address, and I will gladly respond as soon as I can.

Please note that all images are the property of the author, and copyright is asserted. Please ask permission before copying or distributing. I do not mind if they are used for scientific purposes, but I would appreciate photographic credits, as well as a simple request beforehand. In the case of online nurseries or plant distributors that seek images to illustrate their catalogues, I insist on credits and a formal request for permission. In most cases the originals are also available, and of much better quality than presented here.
