Nishiki-dori (street) - a white awning is at the entrance of the covered Nishiki Market at Takakura-dori in Kyoto

The complex electrical and telephone wires seen here above Nishiki-dori (street) is above most streets in the cities of Japan.
Nishiki Market is a covered, five block shopping street and a continuation of Nishiki-dori. The Market is known as "Kyoto's Kitchen" because it has about 130 shops and stalls emphasizing food and cooking products, such as seafood, vegetables, fruits and cookware. Most of Kyoto's specialty foods are sold here. Almost everything for sale is locally produced or gathered.
The Market started as a wholesale fish market in the early 1300's. For the last 400 years it has expanded to a more general retail food market. It is not unusual for a shop to be owned and operated by the same family for generations.
