Red-tailed Black-cockatoo

best viewed at original size

These guys eat mainly seed. They can use that bill with surprising delicacy to pick it off the ground. They also feed in trees, using their bill to break into hard woody pods to extract the seed.

Most beautiful cockatoo and very expensive in Europe. Smugglers tried to smuggle eggs to Europe V

We have some that fly in to strip the seed pods from the acacia, how they
know when and where is amazing. Fabulous shot Don! PS..not sure whether
ours have that red feather..

The red tail and brush cut gives this bird a 'cocky' character for sure :) V

Quite the self-assured character - perhaps that's where the word 'cocky' comes from...

You're lucky to have great birds like this cockatoo around. Nice shot with the red showing in the tail.

Great capture of this almost comical looking cockatoo. Don't think I ever saw one during my years in Australia.
