Copper Plant (Polycarpaea spirostylis)

I’ve read that Copper Plant gets its name because it is considered to indicate the presence of copper in the rocks below. On all occasions that I’ve seen it, it has been growing of exposed sheets of granite, seemingly on bare rock but probably with its roots in crevices so small they’re scarcely apparent. Although its flowers are papery like everlastings, the leaves seem much too delicate for such a harsh environment.
Polycarpaea is in the family Caryophyllaceae.

Used to be ( 30 years ago) very common on 'Granite' on my Mareeba block, now rare. Picked some for inside cut flower, years ago, colour fades over about 6 months to a faint pink in a vase, no water. Still may be there but now much rarer, did see only a few last look, about 4 years ago, have not visited areas of it's occurrence recently.

The depth of field is text book on this photo Don. Great shot. Is the granite you are referring to, strictly rhyolite? Thanks for the background information.
