Coast Hakea (Hakea actites)

The woody “cones” of this Hakea remain closed on the plant for years.
When a fire kills the plant, the "cones" open, revealing the rich colours inside and shedding the winged seed onto an ashbed ready for germination. The fire was 70 days prior to this photo.

Fascinating how many plants are dependent on fire. These 'cones' are a beautiful shape and colour. V
