Marriott Corporation was born when J. Willard (Bill) and his wife Alice Marriott converted an A&W Root Beer stand and opened it with the addition of tacos and tamales to their menu in 1927. They called it The Hot Shoppe and it was successful so they opened more restaurants. They incorporated the business as Hot Shoppes, Inc. in 1929. And the rest of this fascinating story about how they grew Hot Shoppes into the giant Marriott Corporation can be read at: http://www.library.hbs.edu/hc/lehman/company.html?company=marriott_corporation
Marriott's chain of Hot Shoppes had three locations in Dade County at the time of the advertisement displayed below:
3500 South Dixie Highway, Miami
South Dixie Highway at SW 104th Street, Miam
NE 167th Street at NE 10th Avenue, North Miami Beach
