I first met Frank Meistrell when he and his wife Sonja were assigned to my Coast Guard Reserve Unit (CGRU Miami IV) at Coast Guard Base Miami Beach in 1978. I was reassigned to Coast Guard Air Station Miami later that year and rarely saw Frank or Sonja at Base Miami Beach.

I last saw Frank in 1988 when we were in the same two-week reserve unit administration class at the Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, California. We ran around together (photos below) on our weekend off with a few other Coasties and we had a great time out there. I later served in the Seventh Coast Guard District Reserve Unit from 1994 to 1996 with Frank's wife Sonja.

CWO4 Frank J. "Jay" Meistrell Jr. passed away at the age of 75 on October 11, 2014, in Dunnellon, Florida.
