This was the former U. S. Army Corps of Engineers property along Government Cut that somehow ended up in private hands to build condos upon it.

Guest is right. Virgil never lived there, but he was the caretaker. Tompkins family lived in one building, the Allen family in the other. I moved in to the Allen house after He left in 1975. Tompkins moved out in 1979 to Ocala, and I left in 1980 for another job, The army engineers gave the property to the city of Miami beach in 1983. Hi Julie!

I moved here in 2000, these two buildings and the yacht club were the only two buildings in SoFi back then. Now it's a playground for the filthy rich.

Growing up on the southern tip I got to know the caretaker of the Army Corps Property. His name was Virgil Daniels and he lived onthe reservation with his family. The Allen family also lived on the "reservation" as it was called. I went to school with their son Randy, his dad worked for the Corps. They moved there from the Panama canal zone. The wood frame houses were pretty nice to my recollection. When we were inside the gates,You could get away with just about anything. Shooting fireworks, Bonfires or riding minibikes which was a no-no on south beach alltogether was ok inside the gates. Virgil also monitored the weather station on the pier. Sometimes a visiting General or other bigwig would come to stay in the Big houses by the cut with a view and we had to make ourselves scarce.The pilot boat station was also inside the reservation and had the best snook fishing around at the boat slips.
