This taller tower replaced the FAA Tower on top of the MIA terminal but the move eliminated the great girl-watching in the terminal that the controllers used to have on their breaks. This tower was replaced in 2003 when an even taller tower was built a couple of hundred feet away and it was removed about a year or two later. The new taller tower was needed because of the North Terminal Project for American Airlines ("The Project that Ate the Airport") which elevated buildings to a height where the controllers could no longer see active portions of the airfield north of the terminal.
After the FAA completed their move to the west side, Pan Am was allowed to lease the old tower on top of the terminal for use as a ramp operations tower. After Pan Am died on December 4, 1991, the Aviation Department's Gate Control section moved into it at the end of January 1992 after expedited renovations took place. We named it the E-Tower since we were already assigning gates from the B-Tower which was Eastern's former ramp tower before they went bankrupt. American Airlines also assigned some ramp controllers into the east half of the tower cab for ramp operations.
