Wondering if anyone remembers the toy store around the corner from Zips sporting Goods. It was owned by the same people I suppose as it was called Zips Toy Store...

As you would expect it is a strip mall anchored by Office Depot and Walgreens. I only remember when the Grand Union and Luria's were there.

Estela, it was the first store west of the Red Road service road on the south side of Palm Springs Mile and Richards was built to the west of it. The Wal-Mart supermarket that is over there is to the north of where Stevens was located. I don't know what is there now.

By the way, my wife Karen was very pleased that you and your daughters remember her and she thanks you very much.

I remember my mother talking about this store chain. But where was the Hialeah store located? On W 49th St or elsewhere?

James, perhaps someone will write in and give you the information necessary to track down your retirement fund and what happened to it. You almost need to hire a data sleuth to find out where company funds were transferred over the years and where they are now. Good luck!

If anyone can help James out we would surely appreciate it.

I worked for Stevens market in the late 50's and 60's. I invested in a retirement fund and was wondering where I could check to find out if I am entitled to a vesting fund from them. Please help me. Thank you

Great to see all these comments. Bernie Stevens was my father, and he would have appreciated the kind words and the familiar names. I have plenty of store memories also, some from bag boy days at the Red Road/ South Dixie store in the 61-64 era. Another wonderful memory is of late night visits to the old downtown produce market where my father was a serious big shot - we got all the free samples of cherries and apricots a kid could imagine! After the stores were sold to Grand Union in the early 1960s he moved to Atlanta, where he built another fine company, one that recycled food byproducts into animal feed ingredients. He was still living in Atlanta when he passed away in 2008.

I do not think this is 87th and Coral Way. The southeast corner had a Publix and the northeast corner had Westchester Shopping Center. The southwest corner had office buildings and the northwest had Zayres on the west side and Winn-Dixie/Quik-Chek facing Coral Way but far from the street. This store, I think, became a Grand Union around 1970 or so.

My Dad (Martin Bishop) was manager of the Stevens on Red Road for years. I remember riding out Hurricane Donna in the store with all the front plate glass windows blown in. He opened the store on Bird Rd and 87 Ave, and the Hialeah store on 103 St. dragging me along as a bagboy. He last ran the original Stevens on NW 27th Ave and stayed with Grand Union for awhile before moving to Orlando to be Gen Manager for Fairway Markets. A few years before his death he bought a former Fairway Market in Altamonte Springs and ran it as Bishops Market.

The store that occupied the space after Grand Union where Office Depot is currently was Basics. They had introduced the plain white box generic products of the early 80's and the warehouse concept to Miami before Xtra. Basics didn't provide shopping bags as one of their savings gimmics. You were expected to provide your own and bag your own groceries. Basics was soon followed by Sun Supermarkets which I understand was somehow affiliated with Pantry Pride. The liquor store if I recall correctly was State Liquors. Grand Way, which occupied the center section most of the 60's and 70's was a full service department store similar in concept to Jefferson's, Master's and the early incarnation of Zayre's. Towards the end of the CB craze during the late 70's and early 80's the parking lot became the weekly "break" meeting point for the CB'er displaced from the old Yumbrella and Parenti's Pizza gatherings.

In a sad coincidence, I think this Stevens and the one near Red Road and US1 fell to the wrecking ball in the last couple of months. The one in South Miami is being developed by U of Miami. I don't know what's going on with this one at Bird Road. If you drive past this one, you can see the East wall of the Office Depot exposed to the outdoors. I guess at one point in time it was the left inside wall of this Stevens. Likely covered while it was a Luria's. Funny how things get exposed when things are torn down. I wish I could have taken a look inside before it was torn down, but every time I passed the site, I was in a rush. Now it's gone.

I wonder if anyone goes into old buildings to capture their last images. I'm sure someone somewhere is into such a thing. This might be a good place to share such photos. I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures in the Dupont plaza. I was in there just a couple months before it came down. Sure it was trashed, but every room told a story. One I remember was packed with blue prints. Maybe a maintenance office. Sadly, I bet they went down with the building. I know we won't save these old buildings but it would be nice to save their last standing moments digitally.

I was a bagboy, then cashier, then "courtesy center cashier," then drug stock clerk, then stock clerk, then seafood counterman at this Stevens during Highschool (1961-64, Gables-). The manager, a very nice man, was named Mr. Elkins. My dad first went to work for Bernie Stevens at his (Yes Gail) NW 62nd st. and 27th ave. Store...dad went on to be on the board of directors, something like, "Head of foodservice operations"(Snack Bars, Restaurants, Bakeries,Seafood, Delis) in the eventual 9 stores, from Perrine to up in Boca, I think. One in S. Miami at Red and Dixie, I also worked (at age 14, Jr. Hi) as a bagboy at the Coral Gables Stevens, on Coral Way, between 32nd and 37th ave, just east of the Sears. Bernie Stevens Innovative Ideas(mentioned below by "guest") of having restaurants, snack bars, seafood markets, delis, under the same roof as a supermarket, was magnificent. Dad, as Director/Manager, had to drive constantly between the 9 stores across 3 counties...his company vehicle was a Volkswagen Van that had a refrigeration unit in back, in order to supply various outages! He worked like a dog--hundreds of hours a week. Grand Union bought out Stevens at some point later on, and Dad went into business for himself. I remember many of my fellow employees so well...if any of you are out there, or anyone else from those days--Patty A., Donna S., Phil W, others, feel free to contact me...tjms123@hotmail.com. Love the site.

My mom's friend was Mrs. Stevens. We spent some time visiting at her house and she ended up being my Gables High Honor's English teacher. I saw her a few years ago at a class reunion. I remember once I had to go to Steven's market on Red Road just over US 1 to have a ring sawed off. They had a small jewelry stand there and the jeweler cut it off.

My dad was store manager for several of the Steven's Markets. He opened the Hialeah store and the one in North Miami Beach. There were at least 5 locations, one was also located in Ft. Lauderdale. The Steven's Brothers sold their stores to Grand Union in 1962, my dad left and opened a family grocery in Ojus the same year. Their merchandising concept preceded anything Walmart could imagine. Besides the grocery and fresh produce(with sawdust floors) there was fresh fish, cooked in-store hot deli,in-store bakery, fast food restaurant, barber shop, dry cleaner, hair salon, jeweler, shoes, sporting goods, toys, clothing, shoe repair and liquor store. And Bernie Stevens was a pretty nice guy, too!

mall still stands but who knows for how long. a fence has been put up around part of it and we know what that means. i remember it being a grand union, and then a sun supermarket and a basics supermarket. not sure on the order of sun and basics but i remember both. as a kid the whole concept of bag your groceries at basics was different from all the other places that had bag boys.

the lurias has been empty for ages and is whats fenced in. the liquor store part was last a bank and a coin laundry. both have been closed for a while. around the back of the coin laundry side there was a weird operation going on that looked like a cross between a church and a nightclub. not sure what it was to this day.

the grassy area on the right is abot where the denny's stands. if you continue right (not in the pic) there are some really old shotgun apartments still back there serviced by a dirt road.

The far left store became a Grand Union for a while when the Luria's was there before it may have been an Xtra.
Ray 17-Oct-2007 02:25
I'm not sure how much of this is still standing today. The section in the middle was a Luria's store until I think the 1980s. It closed and has been abandoned ever since. The far left was a grocery store, can't think of the name (Xtra?), but it was like a wholesale open to the public type place. It's now an Office Depot. The far right was a cleaners and I think it recently closed. The center and right parts are all fenced in so I suspect their days are numbered. There is now a Denny's in the front right and a gas station in the front left. Both good examples of excessive outparceling.

Steven's was part of Grand Way, Grand Union, and Food Fair chain. I am not 100% sure if Food Fair was part of the chain, however the other 2 were. Grand Way was a KMart type of store. Department store with a food retail section. There was a Grand Way in NW Miami, can't remember the address, but it was not too far from the world famous Shell's City!
