Due to overcrowding, we, as German tourists, were moved from another hotel to the Sun City Motel in 1992. And it was my greatest happiness in retrospect. When I was about 14 years old, I found an older pen pal at the bar, who unfortunately died a year later due to old age. I still grieve when I think about it 30 years later. The bar at the time was run by a bartender "Al". During this time I improved my English skills a bit. I also fondly remember the delicious free hot dogs at the pool on Sundays.
Good old days, where have you gone...

Greetings from Germany

Rick Jones- I stayed at the sun city motel in 1972 for the whole summer. It shared its ownership with the holiday inn next door. The sun city had a saltwater swimming pool outside. I worked as a lifeguard, umbrella lounge mat rental guy. We sold suntan lotion, crackers, and colas. The rental fees were one dollar a day or 5 dollars a week for the mats or umbrellas. The rental shack was shared by both motels. The holiday inn had a swimming pool above the main lobby. There was a big glass portal window that showed people swimming and entering the water as they dove into the water. People would watch because as people would dive in ,they'd usually lose their pants or bathing suit tops. It was great!

Sadly, it like most of the old motels are now just memories. Sunny Isles changed their zoning in the late 90's and that was the death knell for the old motels. Now you have super high rise condos for the rich, a lot of foreigners. Sun City was originally called the El Sombrero in the 50's when it was built. It had a pool with big port hole windows you could see when driving on Collins Ave. These big windows were in their lobby. Did this motel ever have a stint as a Holiday INN? The sign looks like it was once a Holiday Inn Great Sign?

i think it might still stand. i stayed here as a kid in the 70's and it was cool as it still had most of its 50's look.
