I was trying to find out about Shell's City because I remember we would trek over there from west Miami when my grandparents were visiting because my grandmother loved to shop there. I was about 7 and I loved it because they had exotic stuff I never saw at Northside Shopping Center (close enough for us to walk to)

I remember Al's Newstand and the A&P in the same shopping center. Used to walk down 124st picking up return bottles , get the refund at A&P and spend the money at Al's.

Went to Palmetto as well - Loved Royal Castle - kind of remember them as being similar to Krystal? but much better. What a great picture!!! Remember the 7-11 too. Went to all of the Palmetto schools and graduated in 73. Anyone remember the Mcdonalds opening sometime in that era and it being a big deal? Kind of sad if you think about it.

If you want to taste an authentic Royal Castle burger, you need to go to the newly reopened Arnold's Royal Castle at the corner of NW 125th Street and 7th Avenue. The buns aren't warmed like the old buns were but their Castle Burger tastes exactly the same as the old Royal Castles burgers. They serve Fanta Birch Beer and it tastes exactly the same.

I was from Palmetto High Class of 65 should have been class of 64 with the kids I went to kindergarten with behind the old community house in Perrine. If it hadn’t been for Crabtree and Paskowitch who broke a 1 X 4 paddle over my tail and bruised the family jewels.

Well, I enjoyed the late nights at the RC stake house. We sometimes referred to it as the aluminum room at the RC Stake House. I also remember many after game get together s at the Pizza Place in the Sunnyland Shopping Center south of 112th St.

Getting back on point I was one of a select few photographers that worked on the Yearbook and the HS Newspaper. My buddy Ray Green, class of 64 and I were heading down to Everglades National Park attempting to be there well before dawn to get some good photos. We were hungry though and stopped at the RC on the north east corner of Caribbean and US-1. We didn’t even think that it was Easter Sunday when we arrived, sometime before 4 o’clock. We ordered and Ray ordered eggs up with bacon and grits. I don’t remember what I ordered but I was digging into it when my buddy got his order of grits. He said what is this S---. I looked at his plate and the grits were pink. The short order cook simply replied that those are Easter Grits. Ray never ate much of the grits and we shortly moved on.

Now that building is still on the corner but is now a pretty good Mexican Restaurant but Royal Castle still lives on in the terrazzo entrance way. Check it out.

Another Segway about RC Back in the day do you all remember the shorthand the cook and counter staff used 86 when the cook no longer had the Item and Seaboard when the waiter was ordering to go. The food was served on real china the Birch Bear came in frozen mugs. I used to order pickle burgers because that meant with ought pickles, so they had to make them fresh to order and not serve them from the steam table. I can’t say I’ve had a burger that good since RC closed its doors even at a White Castle or Krystal’s. Dam those were good times .

Not so, Dooley’s Reality is in the original RC stake house building only slightly modified. I ate there many times. It used to be open 24 hour a day. It was a great place for a late night snack or a breakfast at any hour.

I won’t have anything to do with Dooley’s even though the old bitty is likely dead now. She double crossed me to make $100.00 off my security deposit and that’s all there is to say. I’m proud to add that I’ve directed hundreds of prospective customers away from her and her business. That my personal opinion and I'm entiteled to it.

Now Stir Crazy that another story, they never did anything to me and who can call himself a man that doesn’t enjoy a good looking naked gal every now and then.

This is now "Stir Crazy", a girly go-go joint. Jus to the left of this picture is Dooley's Realty (Mary Dooley I believe) which is still there. They've been there since the 1950's. The column supporting the Royal Castle sign is still there but of course the sign it is supporting says something different now.

Grew up just down the street from this place... I was only a little kid so Weinkles liquor had no allure... however, Royal Castle... AWESOME... my folks would take my friends and I (or their folks would take us) to Royal Castle to see who could eat the most little burgers and then to AL's NEWSTAND (LET'S HEAR IT FOR AL'S NEWSTAND!!!) where we would by comic books and "models".. ie cars... to build during a sleep over.. I didn't know I was gay yet.. so could never figure out why I couldn't build those damn cars.... LOL.. used to glue the tires to the body and be totally frustrated!! Oh well.. live and learn... Now I STILL go to Miami everyday from Broward.. I practice law there.. and miss all of the things of my youth.. What a wonderful place to grow up. I'm so sorry that my kids couldn't have grown up there but it was no longer a good place to be when they were kids... Cocaine cowboys, greedy developers, I could go on and on.. but I won't.. I just remember the good times!! Pre Hurricane Andrew and pre hyper development.

I was about 7 yrs behind you Alan, but same story. We used to hang out at 7-11 and ask people to buy our beer for us in 68-70. It's surprising how many folks would actually accomodate. Dooley Realty took over the Royal Castle building. My family knew the Dooleys. Sororiaties and clubs were big back then, i.e., Gentries, Delta Tau Delta, Centurians, etc.

This was the Weinkles Licquor Store that the Original Ridge Rats, who at the time were between 15 and 17 years old, would attempt to purchase alcohol circa 1962-1964. We were most often not successfull in our endeavors. Alan Ogus, Ph.D., Ridge

They were great, splitting a box between friends. I remember spending some time on this corner walking between the Weinkles, Royal Castle and the 7-11 performing some demeaning task as a pledge to get into Tao-Ti. (Palmetto people should remember that sorority)

When my step-dad was going to the Univ of Miami he worked at a Royal Castle (early 50's). Boy, those was great little burgers.
