From the state archives description: "Dinner Key's debut in aviation came during World War I when it served for a time as a Naval Air Station. Note the sparsely settled background."
This was before Pan American came to Dinner Key but Pan American was synonymous with Dinner Key and Dinner Key was synonymous with Pan American and I thought it would be interesting to see what the area looked like before Pan American.
