As the old saying goes, they sure don't make them like they used to. Fortunately our county had Charles Crandon running our county commission for two decades and fortunately he was a conservationist long before it became fashionable. It is hard to imagine living here if all of these places were paved over with ugly condos or warehouses:
Crandon Park
Matheson Hammock
Greynolds Park
Homestead Bayfront Park
Miami International Airport
Now we have municipal and county politicians trying to pave over our scarce open spaces, endangered pine forests and parts of our parks with museums and soccer stadiums that surely don't belong along the waterfront. It sure seems like they are hellbent on paving over every square inch of our county when they should have been buying undeveloped land over the years to landbank open spaces for the public. But of course our slimy politicians take in millions in campaign contributions and vote how even slimier lobbyists want them to vote while Charles Crandon never took a dime in contributions and surely wouldn't listen to lobbyists. Yes, times are different but they surely aren't better.
