Most of the property of NAS Miami was donated to Dade County for use as a general aviation airport in the early 1960's except for the portion retained for use by the U. S. Coast Guard which transferred their aircraft and personnel from their air station at Dinner Key to Opa-locka Airport in 1965. The Naval Air Station's property extended south to NW 119th Street (East and West 65th Street in Hialeah) between LeJeune Road (NW 42nd Avenue/E. 8th Avenue) and Red Road (NW 57th Avenue/W. 4th Avenue) and some property was donated to the county for a large regional park (Amelia Earhart) and the rest was auctioned off by the General Services Administration for residential and commercial development. That auctioned off area includes the commercial and residential areas between NW 135th Street and the Gratigny Parkway and the area west of Amelia Earhart Park and north from NW 119th Street/W. 65th Street to the Gratigny Parkway east of Red Road (NW 57th Avenue/W. 4th Avenue).
