Jmore, I think your talking about the Royal Bakery, just East of the bridge and NW 7th Ave. We went there as kids.

.Thank you for sharing, many happy memories growing up in this neighborhood. I've been looking for a picture of Highland Park Elementary which was in this neighborhood but there is nothing out there. It's as if the school never existed..

Was Valenti's the restaurant where you walked through a cave-like on the way in? Seems to me it was on NW 7th Ave, on the west side, the entrance facing north. If it is, I have a funny story to tell. My husband had eaten lunch there with some co-workers and raved for weeks about their delicious garlic rolls! So he took me there for dinner one night and I couldn't wait too try them. After we were seated and were looking at the menu, they brought us some of those yummy-looking, hot garlic rolls that smelled SO good! But before we started to eat them, the waiter wanted to take our order. As soon as my husband ordered a pizza, the waiter grabbed the basket of garlic rolls and took them away, without saying a word! When we asked later, he said "You don't get those with a pizza, only if you order a full dinner". We were disappointed and felt it was rude. I wonder if he then served them to another table? ;-)

Don, thanks for this one. My dad's grocery store, Quality Food Market was just two blocks north on the corner of 7th Ave and 15th Street. This is another great memory of our old neighborhood.
