Somme 100 Field of Remembrance

Westminster, London, England

This field of poppies has been laid to honor those who fought and fell 100 years ago during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1

The Royal British Legion sent a cardboard poppy to people in the UK. They were inviced to return it with a personal message to honor the courage and sacrifices British troops have made during the Battle of the Somme.

The Battle of the Somme was fought at such terrible cost that it has come to symbolise the tragic futility of the First World War. Its first day of conflict remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army and it was felt deeply at home.

Note that what appears to be stones in the background are just a lot more of these cardboard poppies facing away from the camera.
