Summer Fading

I left for work earlier today so I could amble in via one of my alternative routes. I went via
Cathedral Rock with a view to getting a shot of the rock to start a gallery showing the same scene
at different times and through the season. While on the dirt track this caught my eye, and with the
one dead head it struck me that summer is almost gone, with tomorrow being the last day!!

Thank you MOG, and you've finally convinced me you're not as clever as you think you are!
The word bokeh is a term referring to the pleasing effect of the out of focus areas, not a blurred background!! Given the back lighting and the bright subject the exposure compensation was required to bring out the details of the flower head. At the focal length I was at and the distance the difference in DOF at F5.6 and F8 isn't that different, but using F8 effectively gave me bokeh because of the lighting, whereas at F5.6 the background would have been rendered black and hence there would not have been any bokeh. At F11 the reverse would be true and there would be more detail of what was essentially dead grass, so not attractive.
If you're going to give advice at least be certain you know what you are talking about!!!

Beautiful back lighting, Dave! Shows a wonderful contrast between the prickly leaves and stems and the soft white flowers.

Lovely find. The lighting and composition are just perfect. Such a contrast between the sharp thorns and the paper thin petals.

Love the back lighting! The petals look like crinkled tissue paper! V

Well, Barry Buddy, there's a photographic term for, hyuk, "blurred background" hyuk, and that word is bokeh. As for you, Davey Boy, at -1 1/3 and f/8 you have effectively ruined what could have been some nice bokeh. I'm taking one vote away. -V MOG

PS - For pleasing bokeh, try a wide open aperture while experimenting with focal length and distance between you and the subject. HTH!

Very pretty image. Delicate white petals and sharp thorns. Excellent blurred background. ~V~
