I took this quick snap at a little patch on the way to work this morning where I know there are always various insects. I gather it's a Western Milkweed Longhorn Beetle.
I took it as a test/sample shot to show that adding closeup filters to a zoom lens adds a little extra potential. This crop is about 80% of the frame. In this case the lens was a 55-200VR, but I suspect it would work just as well on a 18-200VR (;->), albeit with a 72mm filter size. Adding the closeup filter reduces the minimum (and maximum) focal distance to about a foot so you need to be precise with your focusing and the depth of field can be very tight (hence the antenna), in this case I used F16 using a No.4 closeup filter. The beetle in this shot was less than 3/4", so whilst not true macro (1:1) it certainly opens up a new little world without a huge expense.
