I like the challenge of difficult light and a bright patch of sun can be one of the most challenging lighting situations. Through experience I've found I have to seriously underexpose to retain some detail in the highlight areas. SOME detail in the underexposed shadow areas were brought back using the Paint With Light II action for Photoshop, although the dark area could have been selected and lightened with a levels, curves, or brightness adjustment. Note: The left eyes in the original had no detail at all. It's been lightened quite a bit. A reflector would have put more light onto the side of the head away from the window.
