I used the method described in this photo series tutorial from the Files Area of Digipets online (PencilSketch.zip...and I wish I had the name of the author, but I didn't save it.
After I completed the described technique I added soft grain from the texture filter in Photoshop (also in Elements). Key thing I concentrated on was dodging out unnecessary detail and smoothing the skin as a result.
