Loon Preening

It sometimes takes a lot of time to get close enough to Loons without disturbing them. If a Loon decides it doesn't want you near it you will just play chase and get nowhere. I ventured out into the cold spring waters in my kayak for the first time early in the season. The water was calm enough but I still was a little nervous having great respect for the danger of tipping over in the newly thawed lake. After a pair grew used to me, they preened and called softly to one another. It was fun observing the behavior that I had read about and hearing the different calls they make.
